See what's happening in our rural community!

Join us to watch the Solar Eclipse – Monday, August 21 at Rolling Rock Park.

It is best to arrive around 9 am. FREE solar eclipse glasses will be available at the park on Aug 21st. Cookies provided by the Grange Members.

The solar eclipse will cross the entire continent, but it makes first landfall right here in Oregon. Estimated time to reach our area will be 10:22 am and will last more than 2 minutes. The sky goes dark during a total solar eclipse.  Part of the sun’s corona is visible, the fountains of plasma exploding into space.

A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon comes between the Earth and the sun, appearing to cover the entire area of the sun in the sky. The moon is about 237,674 miles from Earth, so because it’s fairly small it appears to be about the same size as the sun. When there is a total solar eclipse, the moon fully comes between the Earth and the sun and blocks the sun’s light from hitting Earth. It also casts a shadow directly on a specific part of the Earth at the time. In that spot on the Earth it gets so dark, it almost appears to be night, NASA notes.

A total solar eclipse is a rare thing. They vary in frequency depending on where you are on Earth. Some areas may see total solar eclipses every 100 years or so.  The last one to pass over the Pacific Northwest was in 1972.
